We all have our favourites when it comes to any sort of takeaway food (let’s face it, pineapple wouldn’t be on a pizza if someone wasn’t a big fan). It’s often a go-to dish when nothing else appeals, or it’s a comfort food, or it’s just something special that is always on your order come takeaway night. As a team who delights in all things takeaway, we have a few firm favourites from all types of takeaway cuisine, but a quiet contender for runaway winner has to be pad Thai.
For a massively popular and well-loved dish, pad Thai originated from a time of hardship. During World War II the rice shortage in Thailand led to the promotion of rice noodles as an alternative, supplies of which stretched further. As with all oriental dishes, it’s the extra touches which make the dish; so adding tamarind paste, fish sauce, garlic, shallots, lime and other ingredients are what makes the unique and sought after favourite. Add to that chicken or shrimp or pork and you really have something special. The basic nature of pad Thai means that it can be easily cooked and sold by street vendors or smaller, faster, more casual restaurants and eateries.
Pad Thai has become one of Thailand’s national dishes, and was promoted as a way of bolstering the image and confidence of the country. It is immensely popular around the world (and with us here at CTM); in fact a survey a few years ago placed it at number five in a list of the world's most delicious foods. Pad Thai is the signature dish in pretty much every Thai restaurant. It’s one of those dishes which are so simple yet so full of flavour that it really hits the spot every time. We love it!
